Saturday 10th June The May island is now an important National Nature Reserve particularly for seabirds in the Firth of Forth. It was an important ecclesiastical settlement in the Middle Ages particularly associated with St Adrian.It ceased to important in this way at the Reformation. The Reformers were interested in preaching to the people but not in venerating Holy Places. This will be a whole day excursion because for a party of any size the island has to be approached from Anstruther.
The coach will leave Dunbar on Saturday 10th June at 9.40 picking up at East Linton Bridge at 9.50, Haddington County Buildings at 10.00 and Tranent Police Station at 1015 ETA at Anstruther is 11.45 for the boat departure at 12 noon The coach will depart from Anstruther for the return journey at 1645.The cost of the coach will be £9 and the boat £16, £14 Conc £8 children. Friday 25th August at 2 30 Visit to Auchendinny House by kind invitation of Mr &Mrs John Mc Culloch This invitation will include tea [ cost £5].the maximum number will be 30 and returns must be made to me.Auchendinny was built for John Inglis of Langbyres between1702-1707, traditionally by Sir William Bruce It was built as a small scale Palladian villa. The main house is five bays and three storeys with twin two storey pavilions.Auchendinny is accessed from the A701leading to B7026 at Milton Bridge [Auchendinny House GR253 613]
Saturday 16th September at 2 30 Visit to Stoneypath Tower Stoneypath Tower has been recently restored and it will be exciting to see this work. The tower dates from the 15th century and was the tower house of the Lyell family. It is on a strong natural position on the edge of a ravine. in the Thorter Burn.It should be approached from the B6370 at the junction at GR595 719.Numbers will be limited and a return will be necessary,
Saturday 21 October at 2 30 Visit to Aberlady Bay Members should meet at the SOC building,Waterston House at the outskirts of Aberlady.
Saturday 14th April 2007 at 2.30 visit to Stevenson House by kind invitation of Mr & Mrs Raymond Green. This important house was built in the 17th century round a courtyard. There are turnpike stairs in the internal corners and an important 17th century main staircase. The house was later modified and now gives the appearance of Georgian regularity. The main rooms are on the first floor. The house was restored between 1946-50 and again by the present owners. Further details for this visit will be included in the Dinner notice in 2007.
Return Slips
Please note that we are getting an increasing demand for our outings and in some cases we have to limit the numbers to meet the requirements of owners who are so kind as to give us access to properties which are not normally open to visitors. It is essential that members who are allocated places, but who find they cannot come on the outing tell us, so that another member on the waiting list,who may be anxious for a place, can be accommodated. On these occasions it is embarrassing if people just turn up or bring non members or personal guests. I have to state on occasion that our members are known to me and may have to supply a list.
