The Balfour legacy: exploring the private papers of the Balfour Whittingehame family

The Society is pleased to present this talk by National Records of Scotland (NRS)
Archivists Jocelyn Grant and Tessa Spencer, 2.30 PM on Saturday 17th February,
2024 at the Maitlandfield House Hotel, Haddington.
This talk is most appropriate in our Centenary year as Lord Balfour was the first
Honorary President of the Society.

Talk Summary

In 2022 NRS bought the papers of the Balfour of Whittingehame family, Earls of Balfour, on behalf of the nation. It is a remarkable archive which offers insights into the life of an influential Scottish family over a long period of history.

The talk will provide an overview of the contents of the Balfour collection primarily focused on the family and their residence, Whittingehame House, as a base of operations. It will also explore links to East Lothian and provide guidance on how you can access the papers in the Historical Search Room at General Register House in Edinburgh.
