The Late Herbert Coutts MBE

It is with sorrow that I am intimating the death, after a short illness, of Herbert Coutts. Herbert died on Monday 11th April. His funeral will be on Monday 25th April.

Herbert Coutts had a distinguished career with Edinburgh City Council ultimately as Director of Culture and  leisure. He established various facilities in Edinburgh including The City Arts Centre and secured a number of important exhibitions culminating in the Gold of the Pharoahs which attracted 450,000 people.

In retirement he  involved himself in East Lothian life; in the Prestonpans Battlefield trust  in 2010  and the Scottish Battlefield trust set up in 2015. He was also a trustee of Paxton House and the National Gallery of Scotland. He supported the Knights  of Malta and worked with ‘Dial a Journey’ which provided transport for disabled people. He was a member of East Lothian Antiquarian and Field Naturalists’ Society. He joined Dunbar Community Council and became a valued member. His main contribution was the renovation and up dating of the war memorial. He was a trustee of Dunbar Community Development & Heritage Trust. He will be greatly missed. RIP
