Thursday 18th September 2025, 2.00 for 2.30 pm

The Society is delighted to offer Members an opportunity for a private tour of Newbattle Abbey and its wonderful gardens on Thursday 18th September, 2025, 2.00 PM for 2.30 PM.
Newbattle Abbey
The Abbey was founded as a Cistercian Monastery in 1140 by King David 1st. It then became the Kerr family home in the 16th century and an adult residential college in 1937. The army requisitioned it during World War 2 but opened its doors as a college again in 1950. This fascinating history will be described during the tour. For example it was here that a Council of Nobles met in Spring 1320. They drafted a letter asking the Pope to recognise Scotland’s independence and acknowledge Robert Bruce as the lawful king. This letter became The Declaration of Arbroath! There will also be an opportunity to self-explore the beautiful Italian Gardens.

The cost of the visit will be £11. Attendees will receive a guided tour of a number of principal rooms including the stunning drawing room, widely recognised as one of the finest examples of 19th century interior design. Thereafter attendees will be invited to self-explore the Italian Gardens.
