Gardens and Grounds, Thursday 15th June 2023 2.30pm
It is with pleasure that Members are invited to a private visit hosted by Harriet Dalrymple.
Oxenfoord Castle, which commands a magnificent position above the river Tyne on the A68 near Pathhead, is A listed and was designed by Robert Adam between 1780 -82 and included part of an older 16th century tower. Further extensions were made by William Burn between between 1840-42.
The extensive grounds include formal terraced gardens, and a mid to late 19th century pinetum and woodland garden – some 307 acres in all.
The visit will take the form of a tour of the Castle led by Harriet Dalrymple to include the main reception rooms on the ground floor and the servants’ basement. Our guide will describe the fascinating history of the Castle and its occupants – from the 12th century to the present day.
The formal part of the visit will end with refreshments in one of the reception rooms.
Following this attendees will be free to explore the extensive grounds at their leisure.
We shall meet at the car park at the front of the Castle in good time for a prompt 2.30 PM start.
